The Junior League of Monmouth County Women Making a Difference Awards give recognition to every day heroes who are making significant contributions to our community; the women volunteers who give of their time and treasure and are compensated with only love and gratitude. On November 3, 2017 Dorothea Bongiovi will help present the awards at the recently renovated Shadowbrook Estate in Shrewsbury. Well known for her own philanthropic contributions, Bongiovi will represent the organization known for promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

In it’s fourth year, the luncheon is intended to increase the awareness of the importance of volunteering. Award nominations were open through mid-September and the honoring organization will receive $1,000 on behalf of the woman who is granted the Community Volunteer Award at the luncheon. The 2016 award went to Arlene Lospinoso from Family & Children’s Service in Long Branch.

Dorothea Bongiovi, a resident of Middletown, co-founded the JBJ Soul Kitchens in Red Bank and Toms River and was recently honored with the New Jersey Governor’s Jefferson Volunteer Leadership Award. The award recognizes individuals who, by their example and efforts, inspire and recruit others to become actively involved in volunteerism and community service. Bongiovi also received the 2017 Jacquelyn Kennedy Onassis Award for Outstanding Public Service Benefitting the Local Community during a ceremony in Washington D.C. this past June.

The Junior League of Monmouth County, founded in 1939, has devoted nearly eighty years of service to the community in a variety of ways. The group’s membership commits more than 20,000 hours to the community each year, equal to an in-kind donation of $300,000. In the past decade, the Junior League has contributed time and funds to more than 25 community projects in Monmouth County, including youth programs, substance abuse resources, family services, nursing and literacy programs, as well as many other worth-while endeavors. By honoring women, and promoting such a breadth of volunteerism, the Junior League facilitates the empowerment of girls to become confident women.
