The 2020 Mayor’s Cup Regatta was held on July 5 awarding ‘bragging rights on the Navesink’ to the winner of the race in which a Keel Boat Fleet and a one-design Fleet participated. Remedy, Fair Haven Yacht Works, a Merit 25, skippered by Jeremy Herman was the Keel Boat first-place winner. Second place went to Warhorse, Shrewsbury River Yacht Club, a Pearson 28 skippered by Mike Bosi. The one-design first-place winner was Paul Lucyk, Monmouth Boat Club, sailing a Mc Scow, with second place going to Dave Watts, Monmouth Boat Club, sailing a Lightning.

“Good winds from Red Bank started the Bridge race for the run up to Lewis Point from the start off the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club anchorage,” explained Joe Malik, Past Commodore of the New Jersey Yacht Racing Association and the Mayor’s Cup Committee Principal Race Officer. “On the return to the Oceanic Bridge, the wind began to die, which made the return to the finish a hard slog forcing several racers to retire. Despite the failing wind, all one-design boats and the finishers in the cruising fleet came in under the time limit.”

Inaugurated in 2012, the Mayor’s Cup was originally run to represent the 100-year anniversary of the town of Fair Haven. The town’s origins and continuing character are strongly linked to the Navesink River, with a rich history that includes tradesmen working on the Navesink River and a colony of actors that dominated the town’s social life. The Players Boat Club of Fair Haven was established in 1910 and today is the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club. In 2013 and all the years that followed, the Mayor’s Cup was run by the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club with an open invitation to any and all boats. In 2015, the North Jersey Yacht Racing Association endorsed the race with one of its prestigious trophies, the Irwin Bowl, honoring the winner of the men’s championship. The Irwin Bowl dates back to the 1950s and has been drawing sailors from North Jersey Yacht Racing Association participating clubs on the two rivers as well as all around the Sandy Hook and Raritan Bays. The regatta is typically held as part of the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club 4th of July celebration.

“With Fair Haven’s maritime heritage intertwined with the Navesink River, we are so pleased to host the Mayor’s Cup Regatta year after year, a sailing race that promotes great comradery and friendships with clubs near and far,” said Mayor Benjamin Lucarelli.

On July 8, 230 extraordinary students sat together, but socially distanced, for the last time as they celebrated their commencement from Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School, in one of two unique ceremonies held on RFH’s baseball field.

In keeping with Governor Murphy’s mandates on graduation ceremonies in light of COVID-19, graduates were honored in two separate ceremonies to keep attendance under the 500-person limit. With different speeches by Dr. Tracy Handerhan, Principal, and Debra Gulick, Superintendent, and different speakers in each, seniors (split in half) were invited to attend both ceremonies, while parents attended only the ceremony during which their student’s name was actually called. Though in-person attendance was limited, the ceremony was live-streamed for all family members, friends, staff, and the community to watch and celebrate. Valedictorian Amanda Dym, Class of 2020 President Michael Cushing, and Student Government President Peyton Ming took turns addressing their fellow graduates, parents, Board of Education members, and a small group of staff and administrators in attendance. Each spoke (or rather, Ming rapped his entire speech) about the uniqueness of the circumstances surrounding their senior year, the memories, expected and unexpected, that students have made and the perseverance required of them as they venture into an unpredictable world. Congratulations to the Class of 2020!

If we phrase our headline in the form of a question it may give you a hint where you’ll be seeing Rumson Country Day School and Ranney alum Roey Hadar this month. Set your DVR to watch Jeopardy! on July 17 as a son of Monmouth County competes on the long-running game show.

“It was an honor to be on the program,” said Roey. “I had watched the show for years growing up and always thought it would be really cool to actually be on it. I had played quiz bowl for years in both high school and college and it’s effectively practice for Jeopardy! You have to answer questions about often-arcane knowledge by ringing in with a buzzer and it attracts the kind of people who want to be on the show. I always felt I had a bit of a mind for the game– I would always write the ‘fact of the day’ on the board of my homeroom in school–and tried out a few times. It took a couple of tries but I heard back when I took the test on a whim more than two years ago.”

Roey, who currently lives in Arlington, Virginia and works as a journalist for the PBS show Washington Week, auditioned in July of 2017 and was told he may be called in the following 18 months. Months after the time frame ended he got a call asking him to come to Los Angeles and be on the show.

“Being on the show itself was surreal,” shared Roey. “It felt as if the game had come alive in my living room. I always would watch and call out responses as the clues popped up on my screen but to actually have to pick the clues and play with a buzzer was a new experience. I know that both before I went on and even during it, I felt at once both really nervous and really excited. I was having a blast actually playing the game but could feel the pressure of not doing something overly embarrassing on TV. I actually blanked on most of the game and I’ll learn a lot about it when I see it air.” Having met host Alex Trebek once before when he represented New Jersey as the state bee champion at the National Geographic Bee, Roey said his interaction this time was limited.

“Alex is kept away from chatting with contestants too much to avoid any perceived conflict of interest or challenge to the objectivity of the game,” said Roey. “He comes out, hosts the game for you and leaves. I did get to chat with him briefly when I shared my anecdote and also at the end of the show in the conversation you see as the credits roll, but other than that, that’s about it. He did take questions from the audience during breaks in the show, however, and was quite friendly and welcoming there. He updated us on his cancer recovery (he said he would feel tired at the end of the day but that he was still in good spirits) and also showed pictures of himself still doing DIY work in his house.”

A graduate of both Georgetown University and Columbia Journalism School, Roey comes home to Fair Haven every year to volunteer with Holiday Express on Christmas Eve. Hopefully this year he’ll have a great story to share about his time on Jeopardy!

It’s truly amazing how one heartfelt Facebook post written in earnest by Fair Haven’s Joe Perrotto started a beautiful Thanksgiving for two special people and for more than 300 others who happened to be reading the Fair Haven Facebook page at the time.

It all started when Deborah Stevens from Washington, D.C. placed a phone call to the Adjutant of the American Legion Post 168 asking if there would be a Thanksgiving Day Dinner for the local veterans in the Fair Haven area. That is something that used to happen but does not anymore. Joe Perrotto — the man who answered that call and a Fair Haven resident, First Aid Squad member and former United States Marine — felt bad that they no longer organized dinners on holidays for the veterans, so he began to search for a solution. Joe has a passion to recognize and honor all those who have served our country both past and present. He began the quest to find a local restaurant that would have a table last minute on Thanksgiving and could accommodate Henry Stevens, a 98-year-old WWII Veteran from Fair Haven, and his daughter, who was visiting for the holiday.

He posted the question on the “Fair Haven, NJ” Facebook page. Henry’s daughter Deborah was driving from Washington, D.C. to spend the holiday with her father and hoped to get a reservation at a local eatery. Joe asked if anyone knew where they could get dinner on Thanksgiving and that is where the beauty begins. One post, many likes, multiple tags, a few shares and within moments a happy ending while over 300 eyes were emotionally contributing and watching it all happen. The offers came in like wildfire and in my opinion the typical style for the people of Fair Haven – “I’ll have him over to my house”, “I’ll cook them dinner”, “They can join our family”, “We would love to bring him and his daughter dinner and food!” But in the end, Julie Aurichio and her fiancé and Raven and The Peach chef Robert Candiotti gave this story the feel-good moment by inviting them to come to dinner at the Raven and the Peach in Fair Haven. Not only would they make Henry and his daughter Deborah dinner, but they would pay for it too.

Deborah couldn’t make it on Thanksgiving, but Rob and Julie delivered the meal to Henry’s Fair Haven home instead and made a date to make him lunch, which Henry insisted he pay for since they made him Thanksgiving dinner! Julie managed to get local Fair Haven elementary school children to make Henry cards and dropped them off as well.

On November 29, 2018, Henry Stevens, a Navy lieutenant junior grade in World War II, his daughter Deborah and Joe Perrotto, had lunch at the Raven and The Peach Tea Room, were greeted by Chef Rob Candiotti and sat and got to know one another. Since then I think more people know about Henry and will most likely help him out from time to time. When I asked Julie Aurichio for a quote about this she said, “It’s not like I did anything great or unusual. I did nothing. I responded the way people should always respond every day. We should help one another every day, not just on Thanksgiving and not just because they saw it on Facebook.” Since that post, Julie and Rob have offered to clean his house from time to time and make him Christmas dinner. But then again that is just what Julie and Rob do.

We should help one another every day, not just on Thanksgiving and not just because they saw it on Facebook.

After the lunch, Joe introduced Henry to another local hero and neighbor in Fair Haven, Josh Zager, a retired Major in the Marine Corps and an F-18 pilot who flew over 40 combat missions in Afghanistan. They sat and talked for close to two hours that day, sharing heartwarming stories from the past. Henry served as an engineer on the USS Tuscaloosa, a Navy cruiser that President Roosevelt and other officials sometimes used for travel in the years before the United States entered WWII. The ship was involved in both the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns and participated in shore bombardment of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Henry’s memory is sharp, and he can describe in detail the operation of the ship, what it felt like to be in the engine room during an attack, and shore leave in exotic ports, such as Shanghai. Henry has a collection of service medals from all the areas his ship visited – from China to the Mediterranean. Can you imagine being in that room with three local modern-day heroes and one from the greatest generation that ever lived, hearing those stories?!

To think it was just one Facebook post that connected so many new friends (me included) and a renewed hope for all who were part of this beautiful story. Henry turns 99 this month. Happy Birthday, Henry Stevens, and thank you!

Created in 1997, the Jane G. Freeholder Deputy Director Lillian G. Burry, Fred Carl, and Middletown Mayor (now Freeholder) Gerry P. Scharfenberger, Ph.D. are the previous winners of the French Award.

Archives and History Day will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, located at 125 Symmes Drive in Manalapan. Archives and History Day, an annual event since 1996, is organized by the Monmouth County Archives under the direction of Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon. Public Works crews prepping roads and monitoring storm | Emergency Management is ready to assist, if needed

Meteorologists are predicting significant snowfall overnight in Monmouth County and the Department of Public Works and Engineering is preparing County roads and monitoring the anticipated storm.

“County road crews have been spreading liquid salt brine on County roads since Monday afternoon in advance of the threat of snow,” said Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the County’s Department of Public Works and Engineering. “The County’s snow room will open this evening and we will monitor the storm’s progress. Our process helps us manage the personnel needed at the County’s ten highway districts and dispatch crews as needed.”

According to the National Weather Service, snow, which may be heavy at times, is expected to begin tonight and taper off by Wednesday evening.

“If you must be on the roads, please exercise caution and if you come across plows and sand trucks, make sure to give them room to do their work,” said Arnone. “We have 225 trucks and equipment outfitted with spreading and plowing capabilities.”

Just as the County Public Works crews prepare and plan for winter storms, residents should prepare and plan as well.

“Now is the time to make sure your home and your vehicle are ready for whatever weather comes our way,” said Freeholder Patrick Impreveduto, liaison to the County Office of Emergency Management. “Make sure that you have snow shovels, snow brushes and rock salt or one of the more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways.”

Environmental Protection Agency has a complete list of recommended products that are safe for the environment and your home.

Ready.gov, the national emergency preparedness website has many resources and checklists to help residents plan and prepare for storms and other emergencies. Links to these resources are available on the Monmouth County website. You can also follow Monmouth County Government on Facebook and Twitter for emergency information.

The County maintains about 1,000 lane miles of roads, 35 building complexes and the Belford Ferry Terminal along with assisting municipalities.

This November 24, 2017 at Count Basie Field in Red Bank will mark the 16th consecutive “Black Friday” when Little Silver and Shrewsbury residents will square off in a flag football match, formerly known as “The White Road Cup”. The game had always been played on White Road in Little Silver where Red Bank Catholic football practices, which happened to be the border of the two towns. What started in 2002 as a pick-up event among a few friends, has now grown into a colossal community fundraiser helping to tackle hunger with Lunch Break as its sole benefactor. In recent years, the participants have raised over $25,000 and donated trucks full of clothing and non-perishable goods to those in need.

Over the years, the event has expanded by offering more and more flag football games to children, men and ladies who want to represent their town and support a great cause. Hundreds of players from all ages and skill sets come out for the fun every year. This November, the event will have doubled! What used to be a one-game match-up for all the age groups between Little Silver and Shrewsbury, with a winner declared for each game, has now become a four town tournament called, “The Rivalry Series”, which will include a Fair Haven vs. Rumson match-up for all ages.

The winner of Little Silver vs. Shrewsbury and winner of Fair Haven vs. Rumson first-round games will play immediately after in a ‘peninsula playoff’ championship game. The losers of the first-round games will play in a consolation game as well, providing everyone with two games.

The event founder and organizer Rick Brandt said, “Amongst the four towns, everyone knows that there are friendly rivalries between us all, which makes for the exciting match-ups, and regardless of who hoists the trophy at the end, the true winner of the event is Lunch Break who helps those in need by providing food, clothing and fellowship!” Brandt went on to say, “I am so confident in adding the Fair Haven vs. Rumson component to the tradition because of the excellent football pride those two families have.”

Registration for the event is now open and the organizers are actively seeking sponsorships from families and businesses. All of the proceeds go to Lunch Break. Those interested in playing can register today for $100 each at www.TheRivalrySeries.com.

Personalized, custom town jerseys with each player’s last name on them will be provided to every player! There will also be an after party at Val’s Tavern in Rumson featuring The Haven for all families! If there are questions about the event, or if you would like to sponsor the event, you can call or email RickBrandt80@gmail.com or 908.675.7646.
